AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR THE ELECTION OF MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF ROBESON COUNTY.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

 

Section 1. The Board of Education of Robeson County shall consist of seven members who shall serve for terms of four years and until their successors are elected and qualified.

Sec. 2. At the same time the primary election for county officers is held in Robeson County in 1968, and biennially thereafter, there shall be held an election to elect members of the Robeson County Board of Education to take the place of the members whose terms next expire. The number of candidates, equal to the number of positions to be filled, who receive the highest number of votes shall be declared elected.

Sec. 3. No primary election shall be held, but each candidate shall file his notice of candidacy within the time now provided for the filing by candidates for other county offices. A separate ballot shall be provided by the county board of elections with appropriate instructions printed thereon. Except as otherwise provided herein, the election for members of the Board of Education shall be held under the laws and regulations pertaining to elections for county officers as provided in Chapter 163 of the General Statutes.

Sec. 4. Members of the Board of Education elected in 1968, and biennially thereafter, shall qualify and take the oath of office on June 1 of the year in which elected. The present members of the Robeson County Board of Education shall continue in office until their successors are elected and qualified as provided in this Act.

Sec. 5. Any vacancy occurring in the membership of the Board of Education, for any reason, shall be filled for the unexpired term by the remaining members of the Board of Education.

Sec. 6. All laws and clauses of laws in conflict with this Act are hereby repealed.

Sec. 7. This Act shall be in full force and effect from and after its ratification.
