HOUSE BILL 55

 

 

AN ACT ESTABLISHING THE HISTORIC MURFREESBORO COMMISSION.

 

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

 

Section 1. The Historic Murfreesboro Commission is hereby established for the purpose of conducting research and planning and carrying out a program for the preservation of historic sites and buildings in and near the Town of Murfreesboro, in cooperation with local, State, or federal agencies or private organizations.

Sec. 2. The Historic Murfreesboro Commission shall consist of the following ex officio members: the Mayor of the Town of Murfreesboro, the President of Chowan College, the chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Hertford County, and the director of the State Department of Archives and History, or a deputy designated by each of the aforesaid ex officio members. In addition, the Commission shall include thirty members to be appointed by the Governor, six for a term of two years, six for a term of three years, six for a term of four years, and six for a term of five years, and as the terms of each group expire, their successors shall be appointed for full five-year terms. The Governor is authorized to fill any vacancies in the terms of the appointed members.

Sec. 3. The aforesaid Commission is authorized and empowered to acquire title to historic properties in and near the Town of Murfreesboro and to repair, restore, or otherwise improve such properties and to maintain them until the work of the Commission may be terminated.

Sec. 4. All laws and clauses of laws in conflict with this Act are hereby repealed.

Sec. 5. This Act shall be in full force and effect from and after its ratification.
